An MC number is FMCSA operating authority. It lets your company haul regulated freight for pay across state lines, or broker freight for others. Most new trucking companies that haul for customers in interstate commerce need an MC number and a USDOT number.
How do I apply for an MC number in 2026?
Apply online in FMCSA's Motus system at motus.dot.gov. You create an account, pass an online identity check with a government-issued ID, apply for your USDOT number and operating authority, and pay $300 per authority type.
How much does it cost to get trucking authority?
FMCSA charges $300 per authority type and a USDOT number is free. Expect a BOC-3 filing (usually under $100), UCR registration ($46 for 2026, $55 for 2027 for 0 to 2 trucks), and insurance, which is the biggest cost for most new carriers.
How long does it take to get MC authority?
Most new carriers are active in about 3 to 6 weeks. That includes FMCSA review, a 10-day protest period after your application is published, and the time for your insurance company and process agent to file your insurance and BOC-3.
What is a BOC-3?
A BOC-3 names a process agent in every state to accept legal papers for your company. Your authority won't go active until it is on file. Most carriers have a process agent company file it electronically.
What insurance do I need for new authority?
For-hire carriers hauling general freight in vehicles over 10,001 lbs need at least $750,000 in liability coverage. Some hazardous materials require $1 million or $5 million. Your insurer files proof with FMCSA on Form BMC-91 or BMC-91X.
